I tried it and everything worked so far except the audio driver. I tried the other realtek driver for Win 98 but it did not work. Do you know a solution for that or how to make the Win 95 Driver work?
I am so sick and tired of dipshits like you clogging up the internet with misinformation that makes it harder to actually find valuable information. It was posted 3 years ago. If you have a specific problem, post for other people how to fix it. I just went through it again and made some changes. However, it all worked fine here with the instructions that were there. I followed your instructions very carefully 3 times in a row, but every time I get a flood of rundll32 illegal operation errors.
Reason: Compromised — Web pages that have been compromised by someone other than the site owner, which appear to be legitimate, but house malicious code. Try downloading it with a modern pc then put it into an iso or burn it to a physical dvd and install in the VM that way. Had a fun afternoon installing 98, got the video driver working, seem to have lost ACPI in the process but no matter. Followed with a happy evening reminding myself of the joy of using 98 after 3.
Should mention that I have not yet tried either of those update packages. Use at your own risk but hey, it a VM so worst case gonbak a snapshot. Have now tried both these update packages. The less nervous or more foolhardy may do better.
I may try further options later and see what happens. The official MS update pack does indeed seem to be what it says it is and quickly and easily well, after a typical number of reboots at least install a bunch of security updates, installed IE 6 and Direct x 9. Dear Duncan….. I was able to take a picture of the error message and can send such to you. I have tried at least 3 other authors and their step by step approaches with no joy. I believe the first error is resulting in the second error.
Any thoughts and help would be much appreciated….. I have not yet thrown away all my old 98 software…. When I stepped through the startup and disabled sddhelp. It appears the sddhelp. Hey man great guide. I tried installing the AC97 driver and it appeared to work. Got sound when I booted up, but silent when I tested music in dxdiag. Keep me posted if you find joy for the AMD processors….. I have followed all of the instructions for the graphics driver.
Unsure how to proceed. I did uninstall and reinstall Scitech Display Doctor, but it made no difference. I can play Thandor : Die Invasions, but fortunately… I still got no sound from the game.
The game runs smoothly, everything…but no sound. I hope everybody else happy with your tips so they can play their old game in this modern era. ZIP, commented above? Thank you for all your efforts, I will soon try to apply all your recommendations. I know WHO you are! Yes: you are the only one who is able to squeeze 8 GB out of a fixed disk of 2 GB. I am honoured and privileged! Thank you, Duncan, for this Windows 98 trip! I did forget and was rewarded with the suggestion to format my beautiful and loaded NTFS disk….
Maybe a point to emphasize somewhere inbetween? Great stuff, still working! The Add Hardware with registry modification method worked perfectly for me. Hoping I can get things working. Found SciTech at MajorGeeks and most of the others around the net.
Well the big problem with the VxD sound driver is that it uses the Windows 95 driver model so DirectSound and mixing and all the things WDM audio introduced with Windows 98 will not work. That takes the fun out of the virtual machine. Might as well use VMware Workstation. Shame on Oracle and VirtualBox to not support the venerable Windows 9x family as guests. Looks like people are still hitting this comment thread. But you also lose decent graphics support. Windows 98SE in VirtualBox starts with plenty of missing files.
You need to disable 32bit protected mode harddisk access in system settings by entering safe mode. The nasty thing is that safemode can not be reached in VirtualBox because holding Ctrl or F5 or F8 during boot did nothing. Installing the following video driver will allow up to bit colour at a maximum 1, x 1, resolution — a lot easier on the eyes. At the Windows desktop, right-click on My Computer and select Properties , to bring up the System Properties dialog box.
Select the Device Manager tab to see a list of system components. The Update Device Driver Wizard will appear. With the wizard appearing, it states that it will search for an updated driver.
Select to display a list, and click Next. This option was typically for more advanced users who knew exactly what hardware they were installing.
Click Have Disk. The Install From Disk dialog box will appear. Once mounted, click Browse , select the CD drive, and direct yourself to the mb folder. INF and click OK to close this dialog box. The path to copy the files from has then updated. Click OK. Based on the INF file selected, the Select Device dialog box shows the models of compatible hardware to choose from. However only VGA is an option.
Select the radio button for Show all devices to expand the list. From this list, select the XGA model as shown below. Click Yes to proceed, then Next to begin installation. Click Finish once done, followed by Yes to restart the computer VM.
Once restarted and back to the Windows desktop, the new display settings whilst still at x have now somewhat improved to colour depth. Personally I set it to bit colour with an oddball resolution of 1, x as it comfortably fits within my p monitor. Windows will note that it will now resize your desktop. Click OK , then click Yes to keep the changes.

The thumb drive physically plugged into your PC should show up on the USB context menu along the bottom of the VirtualBox window beside the other hardware. Upon selection, Windows 98 should recognise that the thumb drive exists, however will bring up the Add New Hardware Wizard requesting drivers.
