Microsoft dual boot windows 7 and xp

So I used the Windows 7 disk to repair the boot for Windows 7 via command prompt or repair startup as illustrated on many sites like windows seven forums so Windows 7 started booting again. Then I went through the command prompt to create the ntldr file so the dual boot screen would load as described on the microsoft support help site.

It seems the earlier steps worked for most people and i have not found a satisfactory solution to this problem so far. Everything I do seems to only let me boot into one or the other, regardless of whether or not the dual boot screen comes up. Can anyone help me out please? Can't say if the above will work but its a starting point.

Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. Dual-booting is a highly technical configuration. If you make a mistake, you can make your computer un-bootable. If you're honest enough to admit you're a newbie, don't try to dual-boot? If you want to run Windows XP - and you have a valid license to install Windows XP - a safer option is to run it in a virtual machine. Setting up a virtual machine is also very technical, but if you make a mistake with it you will not harm your computer.

I've read that virtual machine will not work with hardware that is dependent on the XP drivers. What I'm finding in my research is mostly folks wanting to either install 10 on a machine with XP, or upgraded XP to I'm pretty much wanting to go backwards. I too want to dual boot XP on my Windows 10 machine. Difference is that my laptop came with Windows 8 and was recently upgraded to Windows I have found that I can start the process by holding f9 when starting Windows 10 which gives me a boot option menu to boot from usb or cd.

Yes, this can be done. If Windows XP is already installed, and Windows 7 is added to the system later then a dual-boot menu will be created for you during the Windows 7 installation. A separate partition must be present on the hard drive for the location of the windows 7 install. This is only necessary for running sotware which uses 3D display functions.

For general applications software Microsoft Virtual Machine can be installed in Windows 7, and then Windows XP added as a 'virtual machine'. Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise versions entitle you to a free, preconfigured Windows XP license for this. Yes you can even create a tripple boot of XP bit, Windows 7 any full product bit version and Windows 7 bit.

Have a second hard drive and you can add even more versions of Windows 7. Managing this is made easy if you install XP first and then Windows 7. Use EasyBCD to customise you boot titles and more. Thats easy with a program I discovered called Portlock Leap Frog, it allows you to dual boot windows XP or vista with WIndows 7 withouth having to parition the free space on your local hard drive.

It will create a dual boot environment for xp and windows 7 on the same hard drive. No configuring the Wizard does it all. Although Portlock Leap Frog can install Windows 7 x64 for you it cannot guarantee that x64 Windows 7 will run on your computer, if your computer does not support x64 systems then when booting up and choosing windows 7 it will bluescreen.

Saturday, February 12, PM. Once upon a time I ran a dual boot with XP and W7. If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate or disruptive, please ignore it.
